Connection, Loneliness, and Finding Meaning presented by Kate Kerkmans

2/10/2022

Human connection is essential to all aspects of life. Anyone who has experienced loneliness can attest to this. Now, we have evidence of the effects of connection on our health and well-being. The long-term impact of loneliness and social isolation are measurable and serious. They impact individuals, families, communities, and our health systems at large. Survivors of injuries to the brain, as well as caregivers and professionals know that social isolation is a significant concern in the brain injury community, further exacerbated by the recent pandemic. Kate Kerkmans will explore the impacts of connection and loneliness as well as what tangible actions can be taken to build and improve meaningful connection in all of our lives.

Brain Injury as a Chronic Condition presented by Dr. Flora Hammond and Dr. John Corrigan

11/02/2021

Growing evidence demonstrates brain injury can be a chronic, dynamic health condition with persistent health and psychosocial issues. There is expert consensus that chronic brain injury must be identified and proactively managed as a lifelong condition to improve health, independent function, and societal participation. Chronic brain injury requires a comprehensive model for this proactive management encompassing health system modifications, professional education, self-management strategies for individuals and caregivers, and community-based services and supports. This presentation will review data supporting chronic brain injury as a dynamic condition, describe components of a so-called “disease management” approach and share progress and plans for the BeHEALTHY project.
